Research Log - Michael Ross

I chose Michael Ross' photography because he shows off the creative use of light in a number of ways, from light drawing to night photograph to the use of water reflections. I really like all his photography because the way he portrays light is very unique and abstract.

This photograph is very creative because of the use of colour. The use of reflection also is a very good way of showing off the creative use of light. The contrast between the colours in the glasses and the white background make the image stand out. The use of relocation is also shown in this photograph, this gives the image a 3d effect and makes it look more realistic.

This photograph shows off the creative use of light through light drawings. I really like this photograph because I have never seen a light drawing in this way, the image is very abstract and unique and honestly it doesn't look like a photograph at all. There is the use of contrast in this image, which again makes it stand out, the black background makes the bright colourful lights the focal point of the image and it draws the viewers attention to this image,

This photograph shows off the creative use of light through reflection. I really like this photograph because of how simple it is. There is also contrast in this image between the bright pink and the black which makes the image stand out. Reflection is a very important factor in this image because it gives it a 3d effect and it makes it look more realistic which I believe is important, especially in this image because the photograph is done so well that it doesn't even look like a photograph.

This photograph portrays the creative use of light very well, through the contrast of the sky and the buildings, there is also the use of depth in this image which is shown through shadows; this gives the image a 3d effect. Another aspect of this image that I enjoy is the way the creative use of light is shown through the sky, as it looks unrealistic and abstract but this makes the image stand out because it is almost unbelievable that this is a photograph.

His photography influences me to try out a number of different way to show off the creative use of light in a creative and abstract manner.
Overall, I really enjoy Michael Ross' photography because each photograph is different and the way he portrays the creative use of light is unique and creative.

Connecting Essay 4

This is a photograph of a light drawing that I found on the internet. I like this photograph mostly because of its composition and the way the light drawing is in the middle of the image. I also like the simplicity of this image because it is still abstract. Another think that I enjoy about this image is the contrast between the black background and the bright white light drawing, this makes the image stand out because of how contrasting the colours used are.

This is a photograph that I took myself, with the theme of the creative use of light, I showed the creative use of light through light drawings. I like this image because of the contrasting colours of black and white, which makes this image stand out. I also like the simplicity of this photograph as even though the pattern created is just a line, the picture is still effective as it shows off my theme of the creative use of light. If I were to take this image again I would ensure the light drawing is sharper and does not have a blur around it because I believe it would look so much better if it was sharper.

These two photographs have many similarities, for example, they are both light drawings and they both use the same contrasting colours, which makes them both stand out. Another way these two photographs are very similar is because they are both very simplistic, as they both just use a line to show off light drawings, I think this is very effective because it is abstract. On the other hand, the images have some differences, for example, the composition of them, the first image has a much better composition as it is central and looks better and less messy. Overall, these images are very similar in many ways such as there colours and the way they show off the creative use of light.

Project Evaluation

I really enjoyed Unit 2 because it enabled me to be more creative and adventurous with my photography. I chose the theme of the creative use of light, I really liked doing this because I explored a variety of ways to portray the creative use of light through my photography. My favourite part of this unit was the work I did in the studio, in particular, the shoot I did to show of blur motion.
My least favourite part of this unit was trying to come up with a new abstract idea each lesson, although  I managed to do it, sometimes trying to think of new ideas was quite difficult, especially as we had to link each shoot.
If I were to do this project again, I would try and do a lot more night photography because I really enjoyed that and I believe that portraying the creative use of light would have worked much better in the dark.
Overall, I really enjoyed this unit and I wish to continue improving my photography skills.

Depth - Image Bank

Depth is a very good way to show off the creative use of light, because it uses shadows. As you can see in the photographs above, shadows are used to show off depth. The use of shadows gives the photographs a 3d effect and it shows off distance. Depth can be used in many ways to show off the creative use of light, for example, in the photographs above, depth is shown by looking down a road or path and also depth is shown through the use of depth of field, whereby the background of the image is blurry whilst the focal point is clear.

Exam Plan

In my exam I will be doing two shoots, one in location and the other one in the studio. In my studio shoot I will be doing more light drawings, even though I have done them in a previous shoot, I want to experiment and try more abstract and original ideas to make my photography more creative. To do my light drawings I will use a variety of sources of light, for example, glow sticks and torches. Also with the glow sticks, after I have used them, I will put them in water and photograph that. Here are some examples of what I am going to do in my studio shoot:

In my location shoot, I will shoot reflection. To do this I will walk around Harlow and photograph objects that have reflection, such as water, mirrors and windows. Here are some examples of what I am going to do in my location shoot:
